Is Your Website or Blog Readable – Increase Readability with Better Designs

In our previous article on Website Usability Tips, we mentioned ways to make your websites, both business & personal, usable. Majority of the publishers start off with something clean, and add on advertisements & plugins & very soon they have a very cluttered website.

Take an impartial look & see if your page is cluttered – too much information on a page is effectively no-information at all!

True, you are able to show more ads, but it reduces usability & over time you would see a reduction in the number of your repeat visitors, less time spent by visitors on your pages & eventually unsubscriptions from your email lists.

Here are some very simple tips to keep your blog readable:

• Use common fonts – Arial or Helvetica, that works on all browsers & on all computers & mobile phones
• Use a normal font spacing wherever possible – tightening the text too much increases the stress level on the readers’ eyes
• Use the normal line-height – a good measure is to keep it 1.5 time the size of the font
• Use dark color fonts on a light background – you may have to use a different combination for other creative sites like fashion, photography & video websites
• Use text-decorations for links – you want your content links to be noticed & simple text-decorations can help you tell your readers where the links are
• Keep margins around embedded images & videos – you do not want your text cluttering up against the pictures
• Keep margins around any embedded advertisements – you do not want your readers to be confused with which is an ad & which one is your content
