The business of clients downloading your professional theme & using it for their business is pretty drab. There are few chances of knowing your clients & there are even fewer chances of building relations with them.

However, in cases where we could, the outcome has been simply stunning! A recent incident had been with Jerry Hooper.

Jerry downloaded the Business Magazine Theme & in a couple of days sent an email to us asking for “opinions”. He needed us to provide a few suggestions on how he could adapt the Business Magazine Theme for his offline business (he runs a retail establishment), a few minor tweaks & a little bit of hand-holding!

You can read here how Jerry adapted the WordPress Business Magazine Theme for his Marine Pet Retail Business.

Help Clients Adapt WordPress Themes to Business

As designers, we often end up building the inevitable. Pressures of time & cost often prevent us from doing something extraordinary. However, in this real life example of Jerry, it was the client who did the main work – thinking & innovating!

A few tips from we learned on the way:

  • Clients buying themes often do not have a firm idea how to use them for their business
  • More often than not, clients will download several themes at one shot & then experiment to find the one that best matches their business needs
  • Provide Clients with ideas of how the theme have been used in the past, or designed to be used
  • Encourage the clients to reach out for help if they find a new way to use your theme. Reward them if you find that it helps your creative business too
  • Occasionally, they reach out with suggestions & when they do, you should grab it
  • Make it a collaborative effort with your Client to adapt your creative theme to their business – the rewards are always great
  • Keep in mind the value you are adding to your client’s business – they know it & they appreciate it, but sometimes they hesitate to ask for help

How do you encourage your clients to innovate new uses of your creative designs?
